The Russia’s Republic of Dagestan is known for producing some of the world’s best martial artists, and Saygid “Dagi” Guseyn Arslanaliev is definitely no exception. 

The Dagestan-born Turkish star currently owns an impressive 5-1 professional mixed martial arts record, but even before putting on a pair of four-ounce gloves, Arslanaliev was already an elite martial artist, something that he credits to his upbringing. 

“I am from Buynaksk in Dagestan,” Arslanaliev shared on ONE Championship’s official website. “The city is famous for its fighters. I believe I am lucky because as I grew up, I was surrounded by very tough guys. The city has a high unemployment rate. Everyone is trying hard to make it through sports.”

For multiple-time Muay Thai world champion Singtongnoi Por Telakun, the hardships came early in life.

Growing up in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, he was raised in extreme poverty and experienced the trials and tribulations of going through day-to-day life with very little.

The grim reality became the driving force to dig his family out of the trenches and pursue martial arts in the hopes of a brighter future.

“I would help out around the house to lighten my parents’ workload. After that, I trained hard every single day. It was tiring and torturous, I wanted to quit, but I thought about my future and the people that I love. I couldn’t quit. I had to fight for the people that I love,” he recalled.

Morel Paul Abesamis, Essilor volunteer for eye health care campaign and graduate of Manila Central University (MCU), successfully topped the 2018 Optometry Licensure Exam with a rating of 87.23%. Conducted by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC), this year’s Optometry Licensure Exam recorded 188 successful passers, out of the 222 who took the exam.
