DiskarTech: The Filipinos’ journey towards financial inclusion

Jev dela Cruz, 21, was one of an estimated 51.2 million adult Filipinos nationwide who are considered unbanked by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). Then came Diskartech, Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation’s (RCBC) financial inclusion super-app that allowed him to open a basic savings account sans the complicated process of opening one.

“If you ask a Filipino why they’re unbanked, many will say it’s because they don’t have enough money to open an account. DiskarTech allows anyone to open an account without a balance, maintain an account without a balance, and have no dormancy fees,” said Lito Villanueva, RCBC’s Executive Vice President, and Chief Innovation and Inclusion Officer.

Now, Jev and millions of other Filipinos have access to various financial services through the app that allows them to become truly resourceful or madiskarte.

Juan Karlos returns from hiatus with arresting folk-rock tune “Boston”

After taking an indefinite hiatus from social media, acclaimed artist Juan Karlos returns with a new single that showcases a more laid-back, stripped-down approach in terms of songwriting and production.

Released digitally, “Boston” revisits an old memory with a former flame, and runs with the fictional idea of “what could have been” if decisions in life were done differently. The song also documents that lingering bittersweet feeling of longing that, because of circumstances beyond control, cannot persist.

Going beyond his comfort zone, Juan Karlos recorded “Boston” alone in his home studio without his band. He tapped Dix Lucero for additional sax and flute parts and Noel De Brackinghe as his Recording, Mixing and Mastering Engineer, who made the material more intricately layered but tastefully sparse.

Social enterprise enables Filipinos to build peace with coffee

What if every Filipino, no matter where they’re based in the country, can be a “force for good” simply by sticking to routine—like, say, enjoying their morning cup of coffee?

Davao-based Coffee for Peace (CFP) proves this can be the case as its CEO and co-founder Felicitas “Joji” B. Pantoja confirms that they are a growing community of farmers and business owners practicing and advocating inclusive development principles in the coffee industry. Social entrepreneurship is their business approach to achieve justice and harmony in society and environment.

“As a reputable processor for good beans and an experienced roastery, CFP means business continuity for business owners but equally: support for farming communities. CFP even gives buyers the option to create their own brand under a MOA where 10% of very kilo sold goes back to farmers,” says J. Pantoja.

A new data center company is ready to power up businesses as Beeinfotech PH (Bee Information Technology PH Inc.) recently opened its first data center in the country. Beeinfotech PH’s multi-million-peso data center is the Philippines’ largest telco-neutral data center yet, tackling the market’s need for a telco-grade and tailored data center services provider.

According to a report from Grand View Research, the global data center colocation industry is expected to have a 13.3% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from 2021 to 2028, with the Asia-Pacific region leading. The Philippines, in particular, is expected to increase its rack space market to 400,000 sq. ft. by 2024. Among the growth factors cited are the increased complexity of building and maintaining one’s own data center facility and the benefit of scaling up infrastructure to accommodate larger data volumes, which increased further during the pandemic.

Beeinfotech PH’s objective is to propel the digital transformation of businesses by delivering resilient and flexible IT solutions. Its arrival comes at a pivotal time when companies are focused on meeting the increased digital demand brought by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is accelerating the digitalization of government agencies and pushing for the same in the private sector to streamline processes and improve delivery of services.
