ANZCHAM and SaferKidsPH join forces against Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Filipino Children

The Australian-New Zealand Chamber of Commerce (ANZCHAM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UNICEF, on behalf of the SaferKidsPH Consortium, to help address the online sexual abuse and exploitation of children (OSAEC) in the Philippines. SaferKidsPH is an Australian Government Initiative that is implemented in partnership with Save the Children Philippines, The Asia Foundation, and UNICEF Philippines.

OSAEC is a borderless and complex crime that requires a coordinated and multi-sectoral response from all governments and stakeholders, including the private sector. Under the partnership with SaferKidsPH, ANZCHAM commits to supporting advocacy, volunteerism, and fundraising activities to keep Filipino children safe online.

“Children have the right to be protected from all forms of violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Addressing online sexual abuse and exploitation of children is a top priority of UNICEF's Program of Cooperation with the Philippine Government for 2019 to 2023. Together with our partners, we are committed to improving child protection systems to address and prevent OSAEC,” said UNICEF Philippines Country Representative Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov. In the Philippines, UNICEF is supporting a targeted program to strengthen the capacity of government systems, parents, caregivers, and community members to protect children from all forms of online sexual abuse and exploitation.

Benefits of cutting salt: How MSG helps reduce sodium content in your favorite ulam

Throughout history, the world has used salt to preserve meat and make dishes tastier. It remains a valuable mineral and can be found in all cuisines. For instance, in the Philippines, the majority of delicacies are made richer with sodium-rich condiments or sawsawan (dips) like patis (fish sauce) and bagoong  (fish paste).

Salt is so popular locally that the UN Interagency Task Force found that a Filipino’s daily intake averages 11 grams, more than double the World Health Organization’s recommendation of five grams. Excessive intake of sodium has been found to be one of the risk factors for non-communicable illnesses like cancer, cardiovascular and chronic respiratory diseases, and diabetes.

“With the risks that come with excessive sodium intake, it is recommended that we reduce our salt consumption,” says Deborah Sales, Ajinomoto’s Science Communication Executive. “While it may seem difficult to maintain the palatability of dishes as we cut salt, there is an ingredient that allows us not only to boost the flavor of your favorite dish, but also lessen the need for salt.”

WWF Continues to Fight Against Plastic Pollution, Advocates for an Extended Producer Responsibility Scheme in the Philippines

Plastic pollution has reached gigantic dimensions worldwide and has caused serious consequences to marine life and the wellbeing of society. In a recent study, it has been estimated that about 11 million tonnes enter the ocean every year. If no action is made, this can triple by 2040 which is equivalent to 50 kg of plastics for every coastline meter worldwide.

The Philippines, based on a 2015 modelling study, has been considered as one of the 10 top countries contributing to plastic pollution, has been continuously challenged with increasing waste generation and the lack of a sound waste management system. This calls for a comprehensive approach among policy makers, corporations, cities, and consumers to ensure that no plastics reaches nature.

Building on its No Plastics in Nature initiative, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines releases a report entitled “Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Scheme Assessment for Plastic Packaging Waste in the Philippines”. This report, undertaken with cyclos GmbH and AMH Philippines Inc, highlights EPR as a critical and effective policy tool in holding manufacturers accountable for the end-of-life impacts of their plastic products and packaging. EPR as a policy instrument also encourages adoption of holistic eco-design among the business sector. The proposed EPR scheme has been based on the findings of the first Material Flow Analysis of plastic packaging waste in the Philippines.

Protect your vision while working from home

Due to the pandemic, millions of people all over the world are working from home, which means longer hours in front of computers. Add to that the frequent use of phones and other devices for entertainment and other purposes. While it is somehow necessary, this may be harmful to your eyes.

For starters, staring at a screen reduces a person’s blink rate, which is key to moistening the eyes and keeping it comfortable. Also, overexposure to blue light, which is the light emitted from digital screens, may pose some eye-related health risks. It has been shown that excessive blue light can increase eye strain, cause headaches and blurry vision, interrupt sleep cycles, affect hormones, and potentially do serious damage to long-term eye health. Fortunately, there are different types of lenses that can address different vision problems.

Filipino Uses COVID-19 Lockdown to Create Game About Vietnam War

There’s a bright side to being stuck at home. The global lockdowns spurred by the COVID-19 pandemic have given many people the rare opportunity to finish their personal projects.

For a game developer with zero programming experience in the Philippines, it was a videogame about the Vietnam War which took almost 20 years to complete.

“I was always interested in history and the Vietnam War in particular,” says game developer Tiger Yan. “I started creating The ‘Nam: Vietnam Combat Operations way back in 2003 but work and life were more important, so the project was mothballed for 17 years. Like everyone else, the COVID-19 outbreak forced me to stay home most of 2020. I saw this as the perfect opportunity to learn basic programming and finally finish what I started.”

Your digital survival kit for these trying times

Do a thorough digital decluttering regularly to help improve your productivity.

The pandemic has forced many to work or attend classes from home and rely heavily on technology to get tasks done efficiently and on time. To further maximize your time, AXA Philippines, one of the country’s leading insurance companies, suggests to try these tech tips and tricks for better output and productivity to make your life easier:

Do digital decluttering. A lagging laptop or desktop is very inconvenient especially when you’re trying to accomplish tasks or meet deadlines at work. When this happens often, it’s probably time to do a thorough digital decluttering on your entire operating systems or extensions installed in your devices. An easy way to declutter is to first backup all your files via Google Drive or Dropbox, then clean up your device for unnecessary files, and empty your download folder and computer trash.  Do this regularly to help improve your productivity as it removes a few bugs and generally speeds up whatever gadget you’re using.
