SM Supermalls launches The SM StartUp Package for aspiring Filipino entrepreneurs

(middle L-R) Mary Jean T. Pacheco, Assistant Secretary, Department of Trade and Industry; Steven T. Tan, President, SM Supermalls; and Karen Cua, SVP & MSME Business Head, BDO Network Bank.
(lower L-R) Gina T. Katigbak, AVP, Leasing Strategy & Operations, SM Supermalls; Bob Tolentino, FVP, Merchant Partnerships Retail Sales Head, BDO; and Grace F. Magno, VP, Corporate Marketing, SM Supermalls

It has been almost two years since the pandemic brought Filipino life and many livelihoods to a screeching halt. According to a 2020 Asian Development Bank (ADB) study of 1,804 Philippine MSMEs, 70.6% were forced to temporarily close with 66.2% reported to have temporary staff cuts during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Bucking these statistics and the odds created by the changes in the landscape, the enterprising Filipino found many opportunities in online businesses, with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) recording over 88,000 new e-commerce registrations at the end of 2020. This figure is projected to be a million e-commerce enterprises by 2022 (from 500,000 in 2020). By taking advantage of the online space, MSME owners have become unsung heroes of the economy, all the while providing for their families and making their business dreams a reality.

SM Supermalls very well understands the potential of each Filipino to be successful business owners because of their founder, the late Mr. Henry Sy’s own inspiring story. Sy, fondly called “Tatang” in SM, started out as a small business owner with his first footwear shop ShoeMart.

Upgrade your COVID-19 safety measures with SM

With the alarming surge of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines of late, it is important that we keep our guard up and upgrade our safety measures at home or when going outside to ensure that we are protected from COVID-19 as much as possible.

To do so, here are some tips from SM Supermalls:

Stay safe at home. During this time of health crisis, it is highly encouraged for everyone to stay at home as much as possible, and only go out to buy essentials like food and sanitation products and tools. While at home, members of the household must also practice COVID-19 protocols: wear masks especially when living with seniors or those who are immunocompromised, wash hands thoroughly and often, and have a sanitation station where everyone can easily access UV, alcohol, disinfectant mat, and hamper to leave used clothes, and other items for cleaning and sanitizing. You can get all these and more at The SM Store. Stay at home and have these safety essentials delivered to you by placing your orders via Viber, Facebook Messenger or SM’s Call to Deliver hotline #143SM (#14376). A bearer of joy

Luz Calamayan (center) during the gift-giving of the SM Bears of Joy in
Patad Elementary School, Sarat, Ilocos Norte.

In many places in the Philippines, one will see underprivileged families in need of help for various aspects of their lives. Needless to say, most children from these families have to help make ends meet, hence they often prioritize the most basic necessities or utilities, over toys or other experiences.

Having witnessed the dire situation many families are facing, Lucena Ulep Calamayan, known to many as Luz, made it her lifetime advocacy to help alleviate the plight of those who are in most need of help. A community-based program volunteer coordinator of a non-profit organization, Luz began her volunteer work back in 1998 when she was still a government employee.
