Five Things to Know About the Nike Adapt BB 2.0

The video reactions of players putting on the original Nike Adapt BB ranged from stunned to unchecked giddiness. Simply put, the experience of slipping into the shoe, pressing a button, hearing the whirr of the power-lacing engine and sensing an unparalleled fit is like stepping into a time machine.

The refining of fit continues in the Nike Adapt BB 2.0, evolving the design principles of its predecessor to improve on-court play, while retaining the spirit of the tech’s underlying magic: the thrill of a glimpse into the future.

Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Making of the Air Zoom Freak 1

Giannis Antetokounmpo spends his off day at Nike WHQ for a crash course in signature footwear. The meetings serve as a starting point for the Nike Air Zoom Freak 1, Antetokounmpo's debut signature shoe, and come sandwiched between nights he scored 32 points in Sacramento and 20 in Portland.
Toward the end of the sessions, sitting with a pile of Zoom Air units in front of him, Antetokounmpo smiles wide and says, "I didn't know anything about this process before today."

The meetings were devised not simply for the creation of the Greek star's first signature shoe, but also for the making of the Antetokounmpo brand; this set in motion a series of work streams, inclusive of apparel, footwear and logo design. Each audience with Antetokounmpo follows Nike's driving ethos — listen to the voice of the athlete — and combines for the full range of product in the 6' 11" forward's initial Nike line.

Breaking Down the Nike Adapt BB

Getting the right fit from a performance shoe is both personal and complicated. Consider basketball: Over the course of a basketball game, the foot can expand almost a half-size during play. A level of fit that feels comfortable at one point might feel constrictive just 24 minutes later. Because the needs of the foot change at any given time based on the sport, its duration and on specific movements, like a slashing cut to the basket, "perfect fit" is a floating target.

The effort to refine fit has yielded a number of innovative platforms through Nike’s history – Huarache, Flywire and Flyknit, to name a few. Perhaps none was more critical to advancing custom fit than the 2016 introduction of the Nike HyperAdapt 1.0, the first Nike multipurpose performance shoe to feature power lacing.

Introducing the Mercurial Superfly and Vapor 360: Fast by Nature

FIT: THE FOUNDATION OF FAST

Fit is the foundation of fast. No matter how innovative a pair of football boots may be, if the fit isn’t right, if the foot slides even 1 mm inside the boot, speed can be compromised. For this reason, fit became the focal point in designing the new Mercurial, leading to its game-changing 360 construction made possible through a new advancement in Nike Flyknit technology.

The Mercurial Superfly 360 and Mercurial Vapor 360 wrap the entire foot in Nike Flyknit. “This new innovation hugs the foot and eliminates the gaps between the foot and the soleplate. In fact, it eliminates the soleplate altogether,” explains Max Blau, VP of Nike Football Footwear.
