Conflict-affected farmers in Marawi receive food assistance

Filipino farmers affected by fighting in Marawi are to receive food assistance from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP). This has been made possible by a PHP12.4 million (€300,000) contribution from the Government of Italy to WFP.

“Italy stands with the Philippine Government in its efforts to assist the people of Marawi,” said Italian Ambassador Giorgio Guglielmino. “Our partnership with the World Food Programme will support the food needs of thousands of Filipinos as they rebuild their lives.”

Australia and WFP provide school meals to 50,000 Marawi children

The Australian Government has provided PHP42.7 million (AUD1.1 million) to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support the Philippine Government’s response to the Marawi crisis.

With this funding, WFP will be able to provide six months of school meals for 50,000 students affected by the crisis.

WFP And USAID hold Second National Forum on Disaster Preparedness and Response

Disaster Preparedness and Response (DPR) took centre stage this week as 150 delegates from national government, provincial, city, and municipal local government units (LGUs), academic institutions, and non-government organizations (NGOs) assembled for a national forum organized by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the United States Agency for International Development’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA). This year’s national forum – the second of its kind – focused on the achievements and challenges of DPR practitioners and setting directions for the next year.

KFC Philippines supports the World Food Programme

KFC Philippines has today turned over 7.5 million pesos to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to support their school feeding programme in conflict-affected areas of central Mindanao. This donation, KFC’s largest amount raised for WFP to date, will be able provide 750,000 school meals to about 100,000 school children.

“Shared joy is at the heart of what we are as a brand.  The World Food Programme has given us at KFC Philippines a means to share what we have with those who need it most over the last four years. We would like to thank our loyal customers and employees for their generosity without which raising this contribution would not have been possible,” said KFC Philippines General Manager Liza Leah Calma-Juinio.

The company’s contribution is in line with the Yum! Brands World Hunger Relief campaign, the world’s largest private sector hunger relief effort spanning more than 120 countries, which KFC Philippines has participated in since 2009. In the Philippines alone, the partnership has, over the years, provided hundreds of thousands of elementary school children with hot, nutritious meals essential to their development and education. These meals encourage poor children to come to and stay in school and help them concentrate better in class.

WFP receives generous donation from Pizza Hut and Taco Bell

WFP RECEIVES GENEROUS DONATION FROM PIZZA HUT & TACO BELL FOR SENDONG SURVIVORS AND PROGRAMMES IN MINDANAO

Through the Yum! Brands World Hunger Relief campaign, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell restaurants in the Philippines have contributed Php 6.1 million (US$144,000) to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for its activities in Mindanao. The donation will support the on-going relief and early recovery operation for victims of Tropical Storm Washi (Sendong) and school meals programme in conflict-affected areas of central Mindanao.

"We are deeply impressed with the dedication of Pizza Hut and Taco Bell staff who actively promoted the World Hunger Relief campaign in their restaurants, and in the process raised generous support to help fight hunger,” said WFP Philippines Country Director and Representative Stephen Anderson. “We are also grateful that they extended their campaign to seek additional assistance for Tropical Storm Washi survivors.”   

WFP supports DSWD in strengthening logistics for disaster response preparedness

WFP and DSWD works together for disaster prepareness

Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman and World Food Programme Philippines Country Director and Representative Stephen Anderson recently signed a Memorandum of Agreement to strengthen the DSWD’s disaster response capacity. 

The partnership, funded by the USAID/Office for Foreign Disaster Assistance, aims to use information and communication technologies to improve logistics information flow within DSWD, which will be of particular relevance in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters, providing the Philippine Government with timely and accurate information that will allow for swifter emergency responses.  WFP National Ambassador Against Hunger KC Concepcion witnessed the signing.

WFP helps government in relief efforts

WFP HELPS PHILIPPINE GOVERNMENT REACH REMOTE AREAS AFFECTED BY TROPICAL STORM WASHI

Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the Philippine Government are extending the emergency response to Tropical Storm Washi to focus on remote, cut-off areas around Iligan City.

Working closely with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and with airlift support from the Armed Forces of the Philippines, WFP has already supplied emergency food assistance to almost 3,300 people stranded in Mungulong, outside Iligan City.

Plans are now underway to airlift food rations to other isolated communities around Iligan City such as Panoroganan where almost a thousand people are in need, and Mainit, where another 1,350 people require assistance.
