Diabetes and Liver Health: Unveiling the Interconnected Risks in the Philippines

This World Diabetes Day (November 14, 2025), Health Experts Call for Liver Health to Be Part of the Diabetes Conversation

This World Diabetes Day, Filipino health experts are urging the public to look beyond blood sugar and recognize the liver’s overlooked role in the development of type 2 diabetes. While the pancreas often takes center stage in conversations about diabetes, a growing body of evidence suggests that Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) and Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) play a major role in driving insulin resistance.

MAFLD/ MASLD’s Impact on Diabetes Risk: An Urgent Call for Awareness

Global research shows that 26 percent of people with type 2 diabetes also have MAFLD/ MASLD, a silent condition that often goes undetected until it becomes more serious.[1] Despite the liver’s essential role in regulating blood sugar, metabolizing fats, and managing inflammation, it is rarely included in diabetes screenings or treatment discussions.

In the Philippines, this connection is especially concerning: the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) estimates that over 4.7 million adult Filipinos are living with diabetes[2], with thousands more undiagnosed.  Alarmingly, while we focus on other health concerns, a silent epidemic looms: nearly 20 million Filipinos—equivalent to 1 in 5 of our countrymen—face the risk of fatty liver disease. This ticking time bomb is fueled by our modern lifestyle: obesity, poor dietary choices, lack of physical activity, and rising metabolic disorders.3

In the photo (center) is Ms. Nanette Medved-Po, Founder and Executive Chair of HOPE and PCX, together with representatives from the awardee companies, which include Beko Pilipinas Corporation, Century Pacific Food, Inc., Concepcion Durables, Inc., Concepcion Midea, Inc., Concepcion-Carrier Air Conditioning Company, Concepcion Industrial Corporation - Cortex Technologies Corporation, Domino’s Pizza Philippines, Generation Hope, Inc. PCX Markets recently held their PULSE event, where they honored 16 Philippine organizations that have committed to achieving 100% recovery of their plastic footprint for 2025, marking a significant step toward responsible production and sustainable practices.

From everyday packaging to industrial waste, the world has produced more than 9 billion tons of plastic, far more than our planet can handle. Of all the plastic ever made, only about 9% of plastic waste is recycled, 19% incinerated, and 72% landfilled, openly burned, or ends up in the environment. In response, PCX is taking accountability for plastic waste and working to reduce the harmful impacts of the plastic pollution crisis. Guided by its mission to ensure no plastic ends up in nature, PCX is driving the nation’s shift toward a circular economy where plastic is recovered and re-circulated as useful materials through reuse, refurbishment, remanufacture, recycling and more.

HONOR Launches MagicOS 10: The World’s First Self‑Evolving AI Agent Operating System

HONOR unveils a comprehensive AI Device Ecosystem Strategy

Leading AI smart devices provider HONOR Philippines announced MagicOS 10 at its inaugural Global Developer Conference in Shenzhen, introducing the world’s first AI agent operating system with self‑evolving capabilities and signaling the industry’s shift from the OS era to the AI OS era.

HONOR also unveiled its 1×3×N ecosystem strategy alongside an upgraded HONOR AI Connect platform. The framework opens HONOR’s AI stack to partners worldwide (the “1”), supports them with three enablement tracks—ecosystem, channel, and technology & brand (the “3”)—and scales across multiple industry clusters (the “N”), including education and office, smart home, audio and wearables, toys, and pets.

“A true AI OS must be an agentic OS that accomplishes a human‑centric value leap while possessing self‑evolving capability,” said James Li, CEO of HONOR. “HONOR is committed to collaborating with users, industry partners, and the developer ecosystem. User co‑creation, industry symbiosis, and ecosystem co‑prosperity jointly form the three driving forces behind our MagicOS evolution.”
