Monsanto, Cagayan gov’t partner to broaden financial literacy in the province

Monsanto Philippines recently partnered with the Cagayan Provincial Government, through its Provincial Learning and Resource Center (PLRC), to conduct a financial literacy workshop to more than 200 government employees and underprivileged college students, mostly children of local farmers in the province of Cagayan.

The program, in partnership with the International Marketing Group-Wealth Academy (IMG-Wealth Academy), aims to build the participants’ know-how in financial management. The 200 participants were selected from select municipalities and farming communities in Cagayan, mostly from the most underserved areas in the province.

Monsanto Philippines Corporate Affairs Head Charina Ocampo highlights the importance of broadening financial literacy especially in the rural areas.

According to her, the country stands as one of the 30 least financially literate countries in the world, with only 25 percent of adults aware of the basics of managing their money.

The 36-year-old native of Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu has dropped two-straight matches inside the ONE Championship cage in 2016, yielding to Singaporean sensation Benedict Ang via third-round stoppage in May before suffering the same fate at the hands of China’s Ma Jia Wen three months later.

What’s Phishing? Don’t Let Cybercriminals Reel You In

Keeping your online accounts secure is more important than ever: A growing number of fraudsters are trying to steal your information, such as passwords and personal banking details, using a method known as phishing, in which they impersonate a business through emails and fake websites.

In fact, at PayPal we receive close to 15,000 phishing reports each day from around the world.[1]

Fraudsters often try and trick you into handing over your account password or personal information, typically using email, and then use what you give them to compromise your account.

“Scammers can impersonate you online, steal money from your bank account, and use your online identity to perpetuate their scams on others,” said Rahul Shinghal, General Manager, Southeast Asia, PayPal.

Online security is a full-contact sport, and it takes a team to keep your account secure.

PayPal defends against 150 major attack campaigns every day, and works constantly with its industry partners to help eradicate fraudulent phishing websites. As a customer, there are some things you can do to help keep your account secure, too.

Who sent that email?

When you get an email from someone asking for personal information, look at the address. Fraudsters will often try and make it seem as if a message is coming from a company like PayPal, but something is always a little off.

“Look for red flags such as poor grammar or spelling, and URLs and domains that don't match the sender,” Shinghal said. For instance, if there’s a PayPal logo on an email but the message appears to have come from an odd website rather than

Other warning signs include any email that demands you respond urgently, asks for your social security number or banking information, or includes suspicious attachments.

“Don’t click on email attachments unless you are sure of its origins, and don't click on emailed links unless you know where the link is going,” Shinghal said.

If you see a link in an email, don’t click on it: It’s hard to determine where that emailed link will really take you. In the case of phishing, what you think is a legitimate URL could lead you to a fake website designed to steal your username and password.

Be careful what you post

In this social media age, we’re all a little more willing to post things like our hometown, pet names and birthday. If you’re also using some of those personal details as password reset questions, then you could be inadvertently handing your virtual keys over to an attacker. Be vigilant about what you share online and with whom.

Choose unique passwords

Good online security starts with a secure password. One fundamental thing you can do to keep yourself protected is to use unique passwords for all your accounts, especially those that include banking information. That way if someone gains access to one of your accounts, they won’t get into others as well.

You should also enable two-factor authentication where possible. With services such as PayPal, you’ll be texted a unique code when you log in, so even if an attacker gets your username and password, they still can’t access your account.

If you think your PayPal account might have been compromised

Contact us at, and forward the email in question. Our team will do our very best to help and ensure that there is no compromise to the safety and security of your PayPal transactions.

Deciding on whether to buy a house or rent?

Home ownership is no simple matter as it is one of the biggest personal and financial decisions you will make.  Is buying a house the right thing for you now or is it better for you to rent?

To help you answer that question, here are things you can consider:

1. Ownership.  Buying a house can you a sense of security and stability.  You will be able to fully own the house or property after paying off your mortgage and need not worry about paying for somewhere to live for the rest of your life.  With your own home, you are free to make improvements and renovate without the need to ask a landlord's permission.  It is also an asset that you can use as equity to fund a small business, a bigger house, or other purposes.

2. Flexibility.  For those whose job requires them to move from one place to another will find renting or leasing to be more practical.  With renting, it will be easy to move out, and you don't need to worry about finding a buyer for your home when you need to relocate to another city or country.

3. Affordability. For some, a monthly rent is more affordable than maintaining a mortgage loan plus other expenses that goes with home ownership such as annual real estate taxes, insurance, maintenance or improvements, and home repairs.  Thus, paying rent will allow you to have a more savings or funds for your other goals like a family vacatino, retirement plans, and even a brand new car.

Michael Bay received one of the highest honours in Hollywood: his handprints in the Walk of Fame.
Bay sank his hands and feet into the forecourt of Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre recently as he was honored for a money-spinning movie career that has netted almost $6 billion.
The 52-year-old Los Angeles native is known for directing some of history’s biggest effects-laden blockbusters, from “Bad Boys” (1995), “Armageddon” (1998) and “Pearl Harbor” (2001) to the “Transformers” franchise, whose fifth installment, “Transformers: The Last Knight” opens in the US and the Philippines on June 21, 2017.
“It brings back your childhood because I remember as a kid I came here. And this is where I went to the movies with my parents, this was the place where I saw ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark,’ when I decided I want to become a director,” he told Agence France Presse.
Bay, who now calls Miami home, worked as an intern for George Lucas’s special effects company Industrial Light and Magic before kickstarting his directing career with commercials and music videos for Tina Turner, Lionel Richie and Meat Loaf.
His first feature film — “Bad Boys,” starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence marked the beginning of a string of collaborations between Bay and veteran producer Jerry Bruckheimer.
“It’s bizarre as a kid to think, this was always untouchable to me, you know,” he said of being honored by Hollywood.
“You don’t ever think that’s possible, so it’s kind of a bizarre thing having your hands printed here.”
Known for high octane action, Bay’s movies have made $5.8 billion, allowing him to indulge a passion for aviation and motoring, according to Rolling Stone magazine, snapping up a $50 million Gulfstream jet and a fleet of luxury and sports cars.
