The three-piece alt pop band leads the 38th edition of The Rest Is Noise PH’s bi-monthly showcase
Indonesian indie-pop trio Grrrl Gang will be coming back to Manila for a show in lieu of the worldwide release of their new album, Spunky!.
Known for their infectious melodies, anthemic songs, and electrifying live performances, Grrrl Gang will be headlining The Rest Is Noise 38, happening on Friday, November 10, at the Balcony Music House in Makati City. The Rest Is Noise PH, Kolibri Records, and Offshore Music are proud to present the return of Grrrl Gang in the country.
“We’re really excited to see new and familiar faces when we perform in Manila again,” Grrrl Gang shared in a press statement. “Especially now that we have a full album to present to the Manila crowd, we’re looking forward to seeing you all. We hope to have the best time together.”
The event will also feature special guests in the lineup, including multi-awarded singer-songwriter Clara Benin, eclectic indie rock outfit Oh, Flamingo!, experimental pop savant ena mori, indie newcomer Ligaya Escueta, and bedroom pop project The Purest Blue, who is currently signed under Kolibri Records, the same label handling Grrrl Gang releases.
The critically acclaimed band recently made waves on the cover of NME for the month of October, promoting their full-length album, Spunky!, which was released in September 2023 in partnership with iconic American indie label, Kill Rock Stars (US), Trapped Animal Records (Europe), and Big Romantic Records (Japan and Taiwan). Upon initial release, the record earned rave reviews from various international publications, including Spin Magazine, which crowned them as the “New Darlings of Southeast Asian Indie Rock.”
Pre-sale tickets are available at PHP 800 for limited quantities only, and regular/door tickets are priced at PHP 1,000. Tickets are available on October 13, Friday (2 pm) via this link: bit.ly/trin38.
About GRRL GANG
Indonesian trio Grrrl Gang build on their considerable worldwide buzz with Spunky!, their full-length debut album. Released on 27 September 2023 by Green Island Music in partnership with exclusive licensees Kill Rock Stars (for North and South America), Trapped Animal Records (UK and EU) and Big Romantic Records (Japan and Taiwan), the album is preceded by its title track and first single which drops on May 31.
Spunky! arrives following some major life changes for Angeeta Sentana (vocals, guitar), Akbar Rumandung (bass, vocals) and Edo Alventa (guitar, vocals), including a switch in locale from Yogyakarta, the city where they formed the band while still in college. “This is Grrrl Gang’s first release after we graduated and got day jobs that made us have to move to Jakarta, which is undeniably 180 degrees compared to Yogya,” says Rumandung. “But moving to Jakarta enabled us to work with Lafa on Spunky! from start to finish.”
Overall, Spunky! is the sound of a band not content to rest on its laurels, despite gathering an impressive list of achievements since Grrrl Gang first got together in 2016 and proceeded to take the local, regional, and international indie scenes by storm, leading to a prestigious performance slot on the pandemic-induced online edition of SXSW 2021 and an A- review that esteemed music critic Robert Christgau bestowed upon Here to Stay!, the 2020 compilation of their early singles. According to Rumandung, “We want this album to show that we’ve changed, that Grrrl Gang is a band that isn’t stuck in one place and that we always have the urge to discover new things.”
In other words, Spunky! proves that Grrrl Gang are – to borrow a
familiar phrase – here to stay.
