GCash earns recognition from Miss Earth ECO Awards 2021

GCash, the leading mobile wallet company in the country, was recently honored at the recent Miss Earth ECO Awards 2021 for GForest, an environmental protection feature on the GCash app which allow users to plant virtual, and in turn, actual trees, while encouraging them to lessen their carbon footprint by using various safe digital services on the app.

Miss Earth Foundation, in partnership with the ECOSystem mobile application, staged the first Miss Earth ECO Awards to acknowledge local government units and private sectors for best practices in environmental protection, ecological conservation and sustainability.

“We are honored to have been recognized by the Miss Earth Foundation for our initiatives in promoting environmental protection. At GCash, we have a strong commitment to promote not just financial inclusion for all, but environmental sustainability as well. This award will further inspire us in our continuing journey to encourage GCash users to be mindful of their carbon footprint and adopt sustainable practices such as cashless transactions,” said Martha Sazon, GCash president and CEO.

With GForest, GCash users can plant a virtual tree while GCash plants a real tree which can range from Molave, Narra to Yakal and more, in designated areas nationwide like the Ipo Watershed, Ayala Land Carbon Forest Alaminos, Luyang Watershed and Socsargen.

GForest users earn green energy points by using the various cashless services of GCash, such as sending money, paying bills, or buying load on the app – practices that lessen their carbon footprint. They can also collect green energy every time they walk if they enable GCash to access their health app or fitness tracker.

GCash has been actively involved in promoting sustainability and ecological conservation in the Philippines since 2018. Some of the recent GForest initiatives include the tree-planting partnership of GCash, Century Pacific Food and the non-government organization HOPE to fund the planting of 1 million coconut trees in the provinces of South Cotabato and Sarangani. This tree-planting initiative is expected to boost the income of coconut farmers in Mindanao. Prior to this, GCash has also partnered with the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) for reforestation initiatives in the Visayas, particularly establishing native tree nurseries and tree plantations in Cebu.
