Would you allow Filipinas to get left behind?
For the members of the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS), the answer is a resounding “no.”
In an effort to increase awareness on women’s reproductive heath issues, POGS is launching an advocacy run on November 6, 2011 called Millennium Run for Women’s Health. Unlike your ordinary run, registration fees of participants will help fund different POGS initiatives for women’s health. Meanwhile, as part of this momentous event, runners will also be pledging their support for women’s issues— specifically pregnancy related deaths, cervical cancer and breast cancer.
Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano will be gracing the event by giving a talk on the status of women’s reproductive health in the Philippines. Meanwhile, Bravehearts President Abbygale Arenas - De Leon will also be present in the said event. She will be speaking in behalf of Bravehearts, a non-profit organization dedicated to raise awareness on cervical cancer prevention.
Filipinas Left Behind in Southeast Asia
In the region, Singapore and Malaysia have the best medical practices when it comes to women’s health because of strong government health support and efficient information dissemination channels. But in developing countries like the Philippines, this is not always the case.
POGS hopes that with the Millennium Run for Women’s Health, they will be able to reverse this trend and increase awareness among women. “We would like to invite everyone to join this cause. After all it is everyone’s responsibility to make sure that no Filipina gets left behind when it comes to women’s health,” ends Dr. Delos Reyes.
