Companies nowadays implement corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs that serve as a win-win platform for their beneficiaries and employees. Engaging employees to give back to communities has become an avenue to boost morale, encourage work-life balance, and empower them to pursue personal advocacies.

In the case of Refinitiv, a global provider of financial markets data and infrastructure, their workforce is not only entitled to participate in community-building activities but also to provide consistent support in the form of financial and human resources to their chosen beneficiaries.

“We at Refinitiv do not just serve financial communities across the globe but also the communities that we work in. By creating sustainable and inclusive programs, we envision a future where everyone has access to equal opportunities and the chance for a better life,” says Lei Buendia, Director for Contributed Operations within the Customer Operations and Managed Services unit at Refinitiv and Manila Co-Site Lead.

With this in mind, Refinitiv recently held its first Volunteer Day through a service marathon, where almost 150 employees simultaneously conducted activities in six locations. This is in support of organizations addressing issues such as eradicating hunger and poverty, promoting education, and supporting the welfare of women, children, the elderly, and even animals.

Together, Refinitiv employees bonded with children from ATD Fourth World Philippines and the elderly in Kanlungan ni Maria. Others prepared meals for the less fortunate with help from Rise Against Hunger Philippines. Meanwhile, animal lovers fed and walked rescue dogs at CARA Foundation’s Save the Laguna Pit Bulls Sanctuary and cleaned the kennels of K-9 dogs at Hound Haven. Lastly, they also taught families about arts and crafts, muay thai, and online selling for the benefit of CRIBS Foundation Inc.

Refinitiv also achieved another first in its CSR program as the nation welcomed a new school year. For the first time, it participated in the Department of Education’s Brigada Eskwela. Forty volunteers visited the Enlisted Men Signal Village Elementary School in Taguig where they painted a mural depicting the values of cleanliness, accountability, and responsible ownership by taking care of the environment.

To show its commitment to upholding and rewarding employee volunteerism, the company grants regular employees up to 16 hours of paid volunteer leave a year. Additionally, they can each donate USD500 to their chosen accredited beneficiary for every 20 hours served, up to a maximum of USD1,000 (40 hours served). Likewise, a total of USD1,000 of community champion grants may be awarded for every 40 hours rendered collectively by a group of employees with the same beneficiary.

“Our volunteer incentives help encourage cause ownership among our employees. We are confident that we will soon see advocacy champions that come from our offices. That is an idea and reality that we highly welcome in our organization,” adds Buendia.
