HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, brings back Snake through Facebook AR feature

Snake, a Nokia classic, comes to Facebook’s new camera AR platform.

The iconic game is brought up-to-date on Facebook camera.

The introduction of Snake Mask and Snake Real World comes with multiplayer functionality.
Through augmented reality, fans can now transform into the iconic Snake and even stream it LIVE on their Facebook news feed.

HMD Global, the home of Nokia phones, introduces an enhanced version of the classic Snake with augmented reality through Facebook’s camera feature. The new filter, the Snake Mask, and game, the Snake Real World, brings the iconic game to a new generation of fans.

The addictive premise of the game remains the same but with a fun AR twist, allowing fans to take on the role of the apple-munching Snake. The Snake Mask and Snake Real World utilize new Facebook AR technology to bring the Snake game to the widest audience possible.

Snake at the zoo? Snake at the beach? Snake on a plane? All of these are now possible with Snake on Facebook camera. With Facebook Live integration, players can broadcast their gameplay live on their Facebook news feed, allowing friends to join the action.

The all-new Snake Mask filter uses the front-facing camera of Android™ and iOS powered smartphones to let players turn themselves into the iconic Snake character while Snake Real World is activated using the rear-facing camera.

Pekka Rantala, Chief Marketing Officer and Executive Vice President of HMD Global, said:

“The world-famous game snaked its way back into people’s hearts at MWC in 2017, during which we announced Snake for Facebook Messenger.

The game was designed for a new social generation—fans could invite friends to play and share scores, making it more interactive than before. This was the first time in Snake’s history that it was launched on a universal channel rather than preloaded on a device. The game gained 121 million players around the world during its peak.

We at HMD Global are bringing the much-loved gaming icon to a new AR era. The enhanced Snake is an immersive experience that lets fans transform themselves into the Snake character and eat apples on Facebook camera—truly an exciting step into the world of AR gaming.”

Shannon Mead, Country Manager of HMD Global Philippines said:

“Filipinos will surely love this new and upgraded Snake game as it brings back the fun and nostalgic moments they had from the original version. Now that we are in the process of writing Nokia mobile’s next chapter, we encourage our consumers to create new memories with the new Nokia phones they can rely on, now made even more exciting by the Snake Mask and Snake Real World.”

The camera filter can be accessed via the Facebook camera and is not limited to Nokia smartphones. It is available on Android™ and iOS.

HMD Global encourages players to share the most unusual places they have played the game using the hashtag #imasnake2.
