Surefire ways to beat Holiday weight gain this year

The festive season is here. This means hello to indulgent dishes like lechon, pasta, cookies, cakes, Filipino-made sweets and alcoholic beverages.  Because of the office parties, weddings, reunions and all sorts of parties, most people gain weight during the holiday season.

But you can defy the odds and still end up looking svelte come the New Year! With a little effort and some forward planning it is perfectly possible to enjoy the Holidays and still be fit and fab in January. Here are some tips from Futuro, braces and supports for your active life, to enjoy the Christmas without the guilt:

1. Exercise – Many attribute the cause of weight gain to excessive eating during the holiday period, but fitness expert Rob Jewett of Absolute Fitness says that much of the weight gain during the holidays is due to lack of exercise and physical activity . Many put off fitness during the holidays believing that they do not have the time to exercise.
Now, you don’t have to go to the gym to exercise; simply incorporate exercise into your Christmas activities.  When doing your Christmas shopping, consciously walk continuously for 1-2 hours in the mall. This will help you burn 200 calories.

At Christmas parties, dance and actively shake your booty. Dancing burns over 250 calories an hour. Active participation in office games ensures that you’re in constant motion, not sedentary.

2. Choose treats wisely – At the Christmas table, take something you only have during the holidays and not something that is available all of the time. Go heavier on the fruits and vegetable over cakes and pastries because these food substances give you better control of your weight.

3. Drink Plenty of Water – Water helps counter the dehydrating effects of travel or alcoholic beverages. Water will also help satiate your appetite as thirst is often mistaken for hunger.

4Spread Out Your Meals – Don’t eat everything at once. Eat small frequent meals. Before going to a party, take a little snack at home so you’re not famished. This will prevent you from gorging at the party.

5. Chew your food slowly -The more time you take to chew your food, the faster you’ll feel full – and the lesser food you will consume. When you take time to chew your food, you also get to savor the flavors and enjoy each dish better.

With all the Christmas shopping, walking and fun activities that you join, make sure you are well protected from injuries.
